The poetry was beautiful; the story that followed was bloody. Good night! The time seems romantic, through the lense of its poetry, but its history-- not so much.

I certainly didn't know that story - in fact, didn't know the Raleigh poem, just the Marlowe one. You're right, the history is downright bloody and gritty. They probably used poetry, among other things, to help them cope!
